As we approach the holiday season, there is nothing better than being surrounded by festive decorations and happy people. While decorating can be expensive, it doesn’t necessarily have to be. Here are some simple (and cheap) ideas for DIY Christmas decorations that will make your home cozy and festive.
Old Wine Bottles
Save a few of those wine bottles from the holiday parties, and turn them into decorations. Simply peel off the label, replace it with some nice ribbon, place a candle in the bottle, and you have yourself a nice centerpiece.
People tend to collect more ornaments than they actually need over the years, but you don’t have to put the extras back in the box. Find other places around your house to hang them (on wreaths, for example).
Candy is a great decoration that serves multiple purposes. Your guests have something to munch on, and it also looks great. You can fill dishes with colorful candies, and you can hang candy canes all around the house.
By getting creative with your holiday decorations, you will both save yourself some money and have a truly unique home for the holidays. Think outside the box this year, and impress your family and guests.
For the most dedicated bargain shoppers, Black Friday may be the best day of the year. If you count down the days to this ultimate shopping day, here are a few Black Friday tips to help you out.
- Use technology. It has never been easier to compare prices. Use websites and apps geared towards savings to catch the best deal. PriceGrabber.com, PriceWatch.com, and BuyVia are great places to start.
- Make a plan. Study the ads, both in print and online, the week of Thanksgiving to know what you want to buy. Compare prices to find the best deal.
- Look beyond Friday. Good deals aren’t just limited to Friday. Some retailers have a whole week or even month of savings.
- Have a budget. Know how much you’re going to spend and stick with that. You can bring cash and leave your cards at home to really make you stick to it. Avoid impulse buys because they may not be as good of a deal as they seem.
- Know store policies. While you might be familiar with a certain store’s return or price-match policy, check to see if there are any exceptions for Black Friday purchases.

Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away. If you’ve been feeling the need to spice up your Thanksgiving gatherings, but don’t want to mess with the menu, here are a few Thanksgiving traditions you can give a try this year.
- Enjoy some down time. While Thanksgiving typically involves plenty of family members, this can sometimes lead to some stress. Be sure to take a few minutes for yourself so you don’t get overwhelmed. Take a walk while the pies are baking or take a power nap before all the guests arrive.
- Put the kids in charge. Letting others help, especially the kids, can make Thanksgiving even more special for everyone. Put the kids in charge of serving dessert. Have them take orders and serve it up.
- Have Thanksgiving for dinner. Many families start their Thanksgiving feasts in the afternoon. Aim for a 5:30 or 6pm start time so you can enjoy a more laid back afternoon. Prepare a few light snacks to munch on throughout the afternoon.
- Create a place to share thanks. Consider making something where guests can write down what they’re thankful for. You could line your table with butcher paper or create a thankful tree with leaf-shaped pieces of paper. Share the thankful thoughts over dinner.

Learn about the Battlefield of Gettysburg
H&H Chevrolet is proud to call Gettysburg, Pennsylvania its home. Years ago, this historic city was also home to one of the biggest battles in American history. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought between the Union and the Confederacy from July 1st to July 3rd in 1863. It resulted in the largest amount of casualties of the entire Civil War. Many agree, however, that this battle was the turning point of the war. Today, the Battlefield of Gettysburg serves as a 6,000-acre Civil War military park that honors the thousands of soldiers that fought and gave their lives in this battle.
Learning about this significant battle is an important way to get more strongly acquainted with the country’s heritage. Conveniently, a visitor to the Battlefield of Gettysburg will find that there are multiple ways to tour the park and learn about this historic event. Choose from bus tours, carriage tours, segway tours or horseback tours.
Many different guided tours are available, and Civil War enthusiasts are happy to teach visitors everything they know. Before your schedule your tour, stop by the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center for a basic introduction to the battle and its significance in the war. The Visitors Center also displays a gigantic, 360-degree view of Pickett’s Charge, a must-see for all visitors.

Tips for buying used – what to look for
Buying a used car is a great investment, often getting you the most bang for your buck. However, there are some important tips and tricks to keep in mind when researching, budgeting, and paying. Read on to see some of these tips for buying used.
According to KBB.com, you need to start with budgeting and research. Find out how much you can spend (subtract expenses from income), and be sure to account for taxes, title fees, registration, insurance, and fuel. It’s also important to research which car is right for you. Want a four-door or two-door sedan? Coupe? Hatchback or minivan? Look at what critics and customers have to say.
Next, find out the value of your current car. KBB.com is a great source for finding the value of a trade-in vehicle, and it can even tell you what to expect from a dealership versus retail value. Keep in mind that vehicle condition has a major impact on value. Sometimes we see what we want to see in our old cars—it’s fair to be a little more flexible with your trade-in.
Test drive the used car. You should never skip this step. Test driving can reveal things like engine noises and handling issues. It can also let you know if you really enjoy driving the car. Are there many blind spots? Do you like the feel behind the wheel? Could you drive this car every day for many years?
Finally, work with a salesman to get the best deal. When getting a used car, you’ll deal with three separate transactions—trade-in car, the car you’re buying, and financing. Spend time with the car salesman working out the best deal for you. And at H & H Chevy Cadillac, we are here to help you!
Tips for saving for a car.
Saving for a car can be a difficult process. Not only do you need good credit to get a car loan with acceptable rates, but you also need roughly 10 to 20 percent of a vehicle’s sticker price in order to make a down payment. That’s why we’ve put together a post on saving for a car, helping you to get your dream car.
According to US News, one of the most important steps is budgeting. Learn how much you can afford by calculating your monthly income and subtracting any expenses. What you have left is your maximum budget for a monthly car payment. It’s also important to account for insurance, fuel, registration, and other fees.
Next, calculate how much you need for a down payment. The rule of thumb is 20% of the sticker price, though the average American pays only 10%. The higher the down payment you can afford, the better your interest rates will typically be.
It’s also important to determine when you need (or want) your new car. Although this might sound like a given, few people realize the impact a few weeks can make in terms of savings. For example, if you are moving soon or if you are getting a new job, be sure to account for an increase or decrease in income as well as the need for transportation.
Finally, stick to the plan. Making savings mandatory is the most important part of saving for a car. Most people find that having their work’s payroll department deposit some of their earnings into a savings account, and the rest into their checking account, helps them to save without dipping into funds. This way, your car fund isn’t affected by routine spending. If you don’t have direct deposit, consider the good old-fashioned money jar.

Furry Fun Days Sponsored Event
Community is important to H & H Chevrolet, which is why we try to support it anyway we can. We are happy to report that were able to recently sponsor two cool local events!
We were very happy to be a sponsor for Shippensburg’s annual doggie carnival, 11th Furry Fun Days. Held at Bubba’s Happy Tails Dog Park, the carnival featured lots of good eats, for dogs and their humans, as well as cool games and agility demonstrations by specially-trained canines. The event also made it possible for shelter pets to find a loving family to take them home.
H & H Chevrolet also sponsored the 2016 Solstice Arts Festival this year. The amount of inspired and skilled creativity displayed at the event was truly astounding. Artisans, musicians and artists from the region gathered to show off their work. Live pottery and drum circles were just some of the attractions found at the festival.
Since 1932, the community around our dealership has trusted us to help them find their next vehicle. Sponsoring these kinds of events is our way of giving back.
