How to Upgrade Your Hot Chocolate

Hot Chocolate

Hot chocolate is the drink of the season for a reason: when we come inside from the cold after building a snowman or making snow angels, hot chocolate warms us up, no matter what age we are. Make your winter adventures even more exciting with these fun hot cocoa upgrades.

Spice it up

One way to upgrade your hot chocolate is to add spices. You’ve had the pumpkin spice latte—why not try throwing some pumpkin pie spice in with your cocoa? Add cinnamon for more subtle flavoring, or even try cayenne pepper for a spicy kick.

Stir in herbs

Mint is the perfect herb to add to hot chocolate—just crush up a handful of fresh mint or even add peppermint extract to get that cool flavor alongside the rich cocoa. You can also try adding other dessert-friendly herbs, like basil.

Make it creamier

When it comes to hot cocoa, the creamier the better. Add a tablespoon of peanut butter, almond butter, or whatever your favorite nut butter is to make your hot chocolate super thick and creamy, without detracting from the flavor. You can even try adding some cookie butter to make it sweeter!

The classics

Of course, nothing beats the classic additions, like a bit of vanilla extract for that silky taste and an espresso shot or two to keep you from falling asleep by the fire as you watch the snow fall outside. (Don’t give this one to the kids, though!)

Edible Snow Globe

There is nothing quite like the magic of a snow globe. This one makes it even better because you can eat it. You will need white chocolate peanut butter cups, 16-ounce canning jars, and some other fun, edible decorations to create this masterpiece.

Homemade Wrapping Paper

You know that stack of old brown bags you got from the grocery store? Your kids can turn those into beautiful wrapping paper. Carefully unfold the bags until they lie flat, carve some holiday-shaped potato stamps, and stamp away.

Candy Cane Mouse

This cute this critter uses a candy cane for a tail and is the perfect addition to any Christmas tree. All you need is some gray felt, fabric glue, and a few other crafty details for this cute creation.

Gingerbread Ornaments

These ornaments are made using gingerbread, but not the kind you want to eat. They have a rich, sweet smell that adds to their charm. You can either bake them slowly in an oven or lay them in a sunny spot to dry.

Fun Family Christmas Traditions

Christmas TraditionsThe Christmas season is a time for bringing people together and there’s no better way to do that than by establishing some fun family Christmas traditions. Here are just a few that you can start with your family this holiday season.

Christmas Countdown

Christmas is an exciting time, and one way to make it even more exciting is to begin a countdown to the big day. There are all kinds of calendars, boards, and other ways to keep track of the countdown.

Pick Out a Tree

Although some families prefer to use fake trees, other families swear by the tradition of visiting a tree farm each year to pick out their favorite tree.

Decorate the Tree Together

The Christmas tree is a symbol for a lot of different things, and it’s fun to allow your entire family to show their personality by decorating the tree together.

Christmas Cards

Another fun tradition that some families partake in is to send out a Christmas card each year with a nice (or funny) family photo.

No matter what you decide to do with your family, find a way to make it your own. Christmas is a great time for bonding with family and friends, so make the most of it.
