Keeping New Year’s Resolutions Is Easier with These Tips

keeping new year’s resolutions

Only about 8% of Americans who set New Year’s resolutions actually keep them. That’s why we’ve put together a list of statistically proven methods for increasing the likelihood that you keep your resolution. Whether you’re giving up smoking, junk food, bad driving habits, or something else, you’re bound to do better if you follow these simple tips.

According to WebMD, psychiatrists suggest exercising when you get the urge to cheat on your resolution. Keeping New Year’s resolutions is easier when you distract yourself from cravings—for cigarettes, junk food, or drinks, for instance—when you work out. In fact, this can increase the likelihood that you succeed by up to 27%.

Next, break up your resolution. If you’re trying to “get in shape” over the course of the year, it’s more realistic to set definitive goals. For example, try to quit eating junk food. Then, when that is mastered, try to drop five pounds. You get the idea. By breaking it up, it’s easier to succeed.

Finally, try to build a network of support. Start a resolution club with friends, or try to make your goals public. If you have other people watching and supporting you, you’re more likely to reach your goals and to keep resolutions. Plus, if you do fail, it’s always good to have friends and family around to help you persist.

Fun Family Christmas Traditions

Christmas TraditionsThe Christmas season is a time for bringing people together and there’s no better way to do that than by establishing some fun family Christmas traditions. Here are just a few that you can start with your family this holiday season.

Christmas Countdown

Christmas is an exciting time, and one way to make it even more exciting is to begin a countdown to the big day. There are all kinds of calendars, boards, and other ways to keep track of the countdown.

Pick Out a Tree

Although some families prefer to use fake trees, other families swear by the tradition of visiting a tree farm each year to pick out their favorite tree.

Decorate the Tree Together

The Christmas tree is a symbol for a lot of different things, and it’s fun to allow your entire family to show their personality by decorating the tree together.

Christmas Cards

Another fun tradition that some families partake in is to send out a Christmas card each year with a nice (or funny) family photo.

No matter what you decide to do with your family, find a way to make it your own. Christmas is a great time for bonding with family and friends, so make the most of it.

DIY Christmas Decorations

DIY Christmas decorationsAs we approach the holiday season, there is nothing better than being surrounded by festive decorations and happy people. While decorating can be expensive, it doesn’t necessarily have to be. Here are some simple (and cheap) ideas for DIY Christmas decorations that will make your home cozy and festive.

Old Wine Bottles

Save a few of those wine bottles from the holiday parties, and turn them into decorations. Simply peel off the label, replace it with some nice ribbon, place a candle in the bottle, and you have yourself a nice centerpiece.

Leftover Ornaments

People tend to collect more ornaments than they actually need over the years, but you don’t have to put the extras back in the box. Find other places around your house to hang them (on wreaths, for example).

Candy

Candy is a great decoration that serves multiple purposes. Your guests have something to munch on, and it also looks great. You can fill dishes with colorful candies, and you can hang candy canes all around the house.

By getting creative with your holiday decorations, you will both save yourself some money and have a truly unique home for the holidays. Think outside the box this year, and impress your family and guests.

Black Friday Tips for Die-Hard Shoppers

Black Friday tips

For the most dedicated bargain shoppers, Black Friday may be the best day of the year. If you count down the days to this ultimate shopping day, here are a few Black Friday tips to help you out.

  1. Use technology. It has never been easier to compare prices. Use websites and apps geared towards savings to catch the best deal. PriceGrabber.com, PriceWatch.com, and BuyVia are great places to start.
  2. Make a plan. Study the ads, both in print and online, the week of Thanksgiving to know what you want to buy. Compare prices to find the best deal.
  3. Look beyond Friday. Good deals aren’t just limited to Friday. Some retailers have a whole week or even month of savings.
  4. Have a budget. Know how much you’re going to spend and stick with that. You can bring cash and leave your cards at home to really make you stick to it. Avoid impulse buys because they may not be as good of a deal as they seem.
  5. Know store policies. While you might be familiar with a certain store’s return or price-match policy, check to see if there are any exceptions for Black Friday purchases.

With these tips in hand, you’re ready to catch the best deals of the season.  Share your other tips with us at H & H Chevrolet Cadillac!

Add Some New Thanksgiving Traditions to Your Family Feast

Thanksgiving traditions

Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away. If you’ve been feeling the need to spice up your Thanksgiving gatherings, but don’t want to mess with the menu, here are a few Thanksgiving traditions you can give a try this year.

  • Enjoy some down time. While Thanksgiving typically involves plenty of family members, this can sometimes lead to some stress. Be sure to take a few minutes for yourself so you don’t get overwhelmed. Take a walk while the pies are baking or take a power nap before all the guests arrive.
  • Put the kids in charge. Letting others help, especially the kids, can make Thanksgiving even more special for everyone. Put the kids in charge of serving dessert. Have them take orders and serve it up.
  • Have Thanksgiving for dinner. Many families start their Thanksgiving feasts in the afternoon. Aim for a 5:30 or 6pm start time so you can enjoy a more laid back afternoon. Prepare a few light snacks to munch on throughout the afternoon.
  • Create a place to share thanks. Consider making something where guests can write down what they’re thankful for. You could line your table with butcher paper or create a thankful tree with leaf-shaped pieces of paper. Share the thankful thoughts over dinner.

Enjoy Gettysburg in the fall.

Enjoy Gettysburg in the fall.

There’s nothing quite like Gettysburg in the fall. The history, the haunted locales, the perfect weather, and the local apple cider all culminate into the perfect autumn destination, so that it’s no wonder October is one of Gettysburg’s busiest seasons!

Gettysburg in autumn is like a storybook fall. During this time of year, you can expect to see exquisitely colorful foliage lining the avenues and the parks. Local apple orchards are bursting with fruit, and the Gettysburg markets offer pies, apple butter, and cider. The weather is often crisp and sunny, with highs in the 60s and chilly nights that welcome warm sweaters and hot coco.

Fall is a great time to visit the Battlefield of Gettysburg whose 6,000 acres can be toured comfortable via bike or horseback in the cool weather. Families will enjoy going a little farther north to the Fields of Adventure, where kids and adults alike will have fun doing fall classics like tractor rides, pumpkin picking and a corn maze.

Like any town with a history, Gettysburg has its fair share of ghost stories. For the more daring visitors, spend an evening taking a haunted tour to learn about the spirits that still dwell on these old streets. After all, what better time to get spooked than right before Halloween?

Learn about the Battlefield of Gettysburg

H&H Chevrolet is proud to call Gettysburg, Pennsylvania its home. Years ago, this historic city was also home to one of the biggest battles in American history. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought between the Union and the Confederacy from July 1st to July 3rd in 1863. It resulted in the largest amount of casualties of the entire Civil War. Today, the Battlefield of Gettysburg serves as a 6,000-acre Civil War military park that honors the thousands of soldiers that fought and gave their lives in this battle.

Learning about this significant battle is an important way to get more strongly acquainted with the country’s heritage. Conveniently, a visitor to the Battlefield of Gettysburg will find that there are multiple ways to tour the park and learn about this historic event. Choose from bus tours, carriage tours, segway tours or horseback tours.

Many different guided tours are available, and Civil War enthusiasts are happy to teach visitors everything they know. Before your schedule your tour, stop by the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center for a basic introduction to the battle and its significance in the war.
